Ubuntu 20.04 LTS End of Support and Future Roadmap

Ubuntu 20.04 long-term support will end on May 31, 2025, which means any Hermes SEG installations based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS will stop receiving OS patches and updates from Canonical. Normally, we ensure that Hermes SEG will run on the next Ubuntu LTS version (Ubuntu LTS 22.04 currently). As of now, the plan is to have users do an in-place distribution upgrade from 20.04 to 22.04 on their current Hermes SEG installation and we will provide an upgrade script to migrate Hermes SEG to 22.04 LTS. More to come on that.

Long term, we are in the process of transitioning Hermes SEG to an all Docker solution. Additionally, we are integrating a mail server (Dovecot), groupware (Nextcloud) and LDAP authentication (OpenLDAP). OpenLDAP will allow Hermes SEG to authenticate users locally or Active Directory back-ends.

Obviously these are major changes to Hermes SEG and development time is going to be significant. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
